The National University of Singapore supported the nation’s plans to provide differentiated care to COVID-19 patients with different needs, alongside hospitals and community care facilities, by converting 28 blocks at PGPR to a Community Recovery Facility from May to July 2020. Considerable efforts were made by NUS students and staff to give the “guests” a warm reception and make them feel comfortable.

Our Message

The hallmark of the Guest Students @ NUS programme was to go beyond basic hospitality by offering the migrant workers something that we do best while they stay with us — i.e. education. Therefore, with efforts from students and staff across the campus, a delightful collection of online content was assembled over two months for the workers’ learning, participation and enjoyment. This curation represents a modicum of our students and staff creativity and targeted effort, giving us a glimpse of the unlimited possibilities when we put our hearts in the same place.

Translation Project for migrant workers affected by COVID-19

42 students – mainly international students – and two staff volunteered as translators to support medical practitioners and community partners to cope with the COVID-19 outbreak. Students are in telegram groups categorised by languages, where they received requests for text, audio or real-time translations. The team translated over 135 documents and worked with 10 partners to empower and bring hope to migrant workers as part of the COVID-19 outbreak response. In February 2021, these translated materials were consolidated and distributed to agencies working with migrant workers.
